The Papers of George Washington [manuscript], 1968 Oct 26

Address given by University President Edgar F. Shannon, Jr. at Mount Vernon in which he discusses past attempts to publish and analyze the Washington papers and the purpose of the new editorial project, which is to "accord to the papers the full and comprehensive treatment that they need and deserve." He continues on to discuss the many obstacles the editors have faced in their endeavor, most notably costs. He says one of the most happy developments of 1967 and 1968 was in obtaining Dr. Donald Jackson as editor-in-chief and director of the project.
